Evolution of the nanoparticle corona

Marilena Hadjidemetriou and Kostas Kostarelos*

Nanoparticles (NPs) administered in the body are rapidly modified once in contact with the biological milieu and various blood constituents, of which proteins have been most studied. Understanding how complement proteins bind to nanoparticles and participate in their surface ‘corona’ can provide further insight into the relevance of the protein corona concept in medicine.
